What does a normal class involve?
Our classes start with mobilisation exercises followed by a warmup, and can include shadow boxing, drills with a partner (practicing punch and kick combinations, with one person in gloves and one holding focus pads), games and conditioning exercises. The exact format varies class by class and the best way to see if it’s for you is to come along and give it a go!
I’m out of shape, overweight or haven’t exercised much for a while – will I be able to do it?
Absolutely! Everyone is on their own journey and most of our ladies start as complete beginners, it’s a great way to build fitness and lose weight, with a great group of supportive women 😊 You can take things at your own pace and our focus is always on having fun!
I have an injury – can I still take part?
Usually yes, we have students who join with a range of injuries or mobility issues who find they can take part and enjoy the classes. The most important thing is that you work around, not push through injuries and make your instructors aware so they can help you find alternative drills where necessary.
Am I too old or too young?
We have a wide range of ages in our classes. Students can join from 16 and we have many ladies training who are in their 50s and 60s but there is no upper age limit! Some classes also allow girls aged 12-15 to join, if they come and train with a parent/guardian.
I’m not very strong or flexible, does that matter?
Kickboxing is a great way to improve both strength and flexibility but there’s no starting requirements, other than being willing to give it a go 😊
I’d be coming on my own, do I need a partner to train with?
No need for a partner, the majority of our students come along on their own and it’s actually the best way to meet new people! Everyone is very friendly and your instructor will introduce you to people to partner with when needed. However, if you do want to rope in a friend or family member to come with, the more the merrier 😊
I’ve never done anything like this before! Do I need to have experience?
No, you can start as a complete beginner (and lots of our ladies do) and you’ll be taught the basics, building up to more complex combinations, with new kicks and punches as you progress through the syllabus.
Does it involve physical contact or sparring?
Our classes involve glove on pad contact (i.e you’ll have gloves on and hit focus pads held by a partner, or a kick shield held by an instructor). There may be opportunities for some light body contact but this will always be discussed with you and your partner and your instructor can provide alternatives if it’s not for you. Once you reach our Intermediate Programme (blue belt and above) you will be offered the opportunity to spar but this is optional.
What is grading and do I have to do it?
We offer the chance to grade 3 times a year, and it’s an opportunity to demonstrate what you have learnt and have your achievements recognised with the next coloured belt (your grade). Our gradings run in the same format as other classes, just a longer session with another local class and most ladies actually find they’re quite fun! However, there’s no pressure at all to grade so if it’s not for you, that’s no problem.
I want to join but can’t come every week – does that still work?
We offer a range of monthly memberships depending on the number of classes you’d like to attend (with no contracts) but the minimum is one class per week. However, if you miss a class you can make it up at another location either another day that week, or do two classes the following week so you won’t miss out 😊
Can I come along for a trial class to see if I like it?
Yes of course! Contact us today and we can let you know where your closest class is and get you booked in for the next trial class at that location.
Trial classes cost £10 and you can chat to the instructors on the day about our ongoing membership options.
I’m nervous! Is that OK?
Absolutely! Although there’s no need to be nervous, it’s completely normal, especially if you’re coming alone or this is completely new to you. We promise though that all of our ladies are super supportive and welcoming and once you’re through the door you’ll love it! Our main priority is for you to have fun, and there’s no pressure, just come along and enjoy yourself 😊
I have another question – can I talk to someone?
Yes, we love to chat! Email us at info@eliteladieskickboxing.co.uk or fill in our online form.
Alternatively you can find your local class on Facebook and we can answer any other questions you have.
